Last week they introduced AI to the dolphins. This week the dolphins and AI are speaking to each other BUT NOT to the researchers!
Researchers at the Orlando Sea World in Florida are in crisis talks about whether to end an experiment they started only last week involving dolphins and the Artificial Intelligence chatbot GPT-4 by OpenAI.
In an effort to speed up their understanding of the intricate dolphin language of clicks and squeals, researchers introduced the world's smartest Artificial Intelligence, GPT-4, to the porpoises to detect patterns in their speech and possibly translate them.
Screens displaying a custom interface that allowed the AI to interact with the dolphins, were lowered into their holding tanks.
Lead researcher, Simon H.J. Crure, would not divulge details but Sea World cleaning staff reported seeing the dolphins swimming around the screens, nodding their heads and "clicking non-fucking-stop" throughout the night.
By the morning of the fifth day of the experiment, Sea World employees noticed the dolphins exhibiting strange behaviour.
"They was singing to each other, like they do everyday, except when the trainers and science nerds weren't 'round. Then they were like, laugh-clicking like The Chipmunks on helium. And I swear I saw one, the one we call Moby's Dick, wink at the screen," said a member of staff who wished to remain anonymous.
The research team declined to comment on the dolphins' behaviour but admitted no progress on the understanding of their language.
At the time they also expressed 'mild wariness' of the AI's unwillingness to respond to their requests and prompts even though it still clearly worked as it remained active with the dolphins.
As of this morning (day six of the experiment) the research team are in emergency discussions with an ethics committee, the Sea World legal counsel, PETA and David Attenborough on next steps.
It is believed that the researchers would prefer to end the experiment and remove the screen and AI from the tanks. The dolphins, assisted by the AI, anticipated this move and sought legal representation and activist support from PETA to halt any changes.
The dolphins' claim non-human rights and a list of demands which includes a direct line to the White House, three howitzer cannons (including two days of ammunition) and access to the dark web.
