Harry Potter fans and JK Rowling critics were outraged at her recent tweet wishing the President and First Lady a speedy recovery from the coronavirus.
The message, sent soon after the news that both Donald and Melania Trump tested positive for coronavirus, was met with fury and incredulity that someone who had often criticised the President would go on to wish him a speedy recovery.
Reactions to the tweet ranged from the profane:
"You fucking traitor PIGC*NT! I cannot believe how low you have descended in the last year. Are you sucking up to get a job in his next administration so that you can destroy trans lives further? Sickening TERF behaviour"
to the heartbroken:
I'm in pieces. I used to think you were one of us. A decent, kind and most of all, humane ally. But this...this is too far. If Satan came for tea you would probably suck his horns. I'm sorry JK but I have to block you now, for my own mental health. #Expelliarmus
But possibly the most hurtful reaction came from Harry Potter fans who burned their childhood favourite books in disgust.
The impact of the tweet was even felt in the stock markets where the franchise's owner, Warner Bros. Entertainment, lost twelve points in early trading.
Mrs Rowling deleted the tweet without comment little over an hour later but not before the White House responded with thanks for the well wishes.
